What is Homoeopathy ?
The history of homeopathy begins with the discoveries of its founder Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician. Hahnemann first coined the word “homeopathy” (“homoeos” in Greek means “Similar” and “pathos” means “suffering”) to refer to the pharmacological principle, the law of similars, which is its basis. (A Condensed History of Homeopathy, 1991, Dana Ullman, M.P.H.)
Homeopathy is the science and the art of healing the sick by using medicinal substances capable of producing the similar symptoms, syndromes and conditions when administered to healthy people. (Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States Revision Service, 1998). This therapeutic system is based on fixed fundamental principles like; Law of Similia (Like Cures Like), Law of Simplex, Law of Minimum, Doctrine of Drug proving, etc (Organon of Medicine, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann). Homeopathic remedies are generally dilutions of natural substances from plants, minerals, and animals. Each and every medicine is scientifically proved on healthy human beings.
Holistic Concept: Homeopathy accepts the concept of the biological whole. So it tries to treat the patient as a whole and not the particular diseased part as is commonly talked about in homeopathic parlance (Organon of Medicine, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann). The greatest locus of our treatment is the individual patient, which means the total patient. We even call it the holistic treatment too. A homeopathic physician does not use the medicine for named diseases neither does he or she try to palliate or suppress the individual symptoms by using the drugs. There are no diseases according to this therapeutic system but there are sick persons. The person has become sick so she/he has developed the so-called disease, because in healthy condition of a person no illness can take its place.
The very principle of Homeopathy is to treat the individual in order to bring the whole person back to his/her true state of health in all three mental, emotional and physical levels.
Homeopathic medicines are not expected by analogy that what brings changes in the frog, rabbit, guinea pig, dog or monkey will do so in humans also. Homeopathic medicines are tested and proved on human beings only. |
